Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that since the 1994 ceasefire, the negotiation process has solely focused on returning Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan. He clarified this in a Facebook post, stressing that there was no alternative objective to the talks.
Pashinyan pointed out that discussions of different outcomes were introduced within Armenia only to address internal political issues. He implied these narratives were unrelated to the actual diplomatic content agreed upon after the ceasefire.
Reflecting on his actions, the prime minister admitted to a personal mistake. In 2018, when he reviewed the negotiation details, his patriotism prevented him from fully acknowledging or accepting the focus of the talks, leading him to withhold this truth from the Armenian public.
This lack of transparency regarding the ceasefire terms, Pashinyan suggested, complicated Armenia’s position. Failing to explain the situation to the people may have fueled false expectations and domestic tensions about the future of Nagorno-Karabakh.
His admission underscores the challenges of navigating ceasefire agreements and post-conflict negotiations. It highlights the importance of honest communication to avoid misunderstandings and prepare citizens for potential compromises.
