Azerbaijan announced on Thursday that it has joined the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization. The country’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Azerbaijan was “unanimously elected” during the 11th summit in Cairo, Egypt. This marks the first expansion of the D-8 since its founding.
The Foreign Ministry highlighted that Azerbaijan’s membership is a historic moment for the group, which represents 60% of the global Muslim population. The D-8 is seen as a major economic bloc with significant cultural and political potential.
Azerbaijan’s entry into the organization showcases its growing international influence. The ministry emphasized that the move reflects the trust in Azerbaijan and its strengthening role in global affairs.
Azerbaijan is expected to play a key role in deepening cooperation within the D-8. The country will contribute to advancing economic, trade, transport, and communication links while promoting regional stability and prosperity.
With its unique position as a bridge between East and West, Azerbaijan will strengthen Islamic solidarity and combat Islamophobia. Founded in 1997, the D-8 now includes eight members, with a combined population of 1.2 billion and a foreign trade volume of $2.3 trillion.
