Azerbaijan’s Top Diplomat Attends Informal Meeting of GUAM Foreign Ministers

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov has attended an informal meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) as part of his working visit to the Kingdom of Belgium.

Addressing the event, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that the organization could play a major role as a platform for sustainable peace-building and development against the backdrop of current security problems in the world, including the GUAM region. The minister stressed the importance of upholding respect for both international legal principles and shared commitments.

FM Bayramov said that Azerbaijan endorses a solution to the situation around Ukraine that adheres to international legal norms, supporting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. Noting that Azerbaijan will chair GUAM starting in 2024, the FM stated that he would spare no effort to promote cooperation between member states in political, security, economic, trade, transport, communication, humanitarian, tourism, and other fields.

He stressed the significance of using the regional potential in the field of transport and communications, particularly advancing the GUAM Transport Corridor project and turning it into an important part of the East-West transport corridor.

“Next year, Azerbaijan will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), and it is planned to organize an event of GUAM within the framework of COP29,” Bayramov underlined.

Noting that a historic opportunity has arisen for peace and development in the South Caucasus region in the post-conflict period, the minister pointed out that the restoration of Azerbaijan’s full sovereignty over its internationally recognized territories is one of the important developments in the peace process. He also highlighted the restoration and reconstruction works, as well as peace efforts of the country.

During the meeting, the sides adopted decisions on the transfer of GUAM’s chairmanship to Azerbaijan for 2024, GUAM’s budget for 2024 and other issues.
