Iran Confirms Detention of Swedish Citizen Working for the European Union

An Iranian court confirmed on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, that a Swedish citizen working for the European Union has been detained. This is the latest known case of a foreign national detained in Iran amid the country’s political tensions with the Western world.

Sweden and the European Union Commission said last week that a Swedish citizen had been detained in Iran. Sweden said Johan Floderus was detained in April 2022 on suspicion of spying. “The Swedish

citizen has been lawfully imprisoned after a preliminary investigation, and the results of a full investigation into his case made by the prosecutor’s office will be sent in the coming days to the competent court,” Iran’s judiciary spokesman Masoud Setayeshi said.

Quoting from the Al Arabiya News page , the spokesperson did not explain in detail the charges Floderus was facing.

Relations between Sweden and Iran have deteriorated since 2019, when Sweden arrested a former Iranian official for alleged involvement in mass executions and torture of political prisoners in the 1980s. He was sentenced to life in prison last year, prompting Iran to recall its envoy to Sweden in protest.

In May, Iran executed a Swedish-Iranian dissident convicted of leading an Arab group that Tehran accused of being responsible for a number of attacks, including on a military parade in 2018 that killed 25 people.
