Albania: Large Participation of Greeks in the Municipal Elections After Beleris Pre-trial Detention

Freddy Beleris remains a candidate for mayor, with minority voters arriving in the villages of Heimarra by bus and car.

The voting in the municipality of Himarras is progressing smoothly until now, with the main feature being the attendance from all over Greece of many fellow citizens of the now-prisoned, mayoral candidate Freddy Beleris . Minority voters arrive in the villages of Chimarra by bus and car.

According to minority executives, the decision of the Albanian court to remand Beleris is expected to strengthen the rallying of the Greek community.

Based on the electoral law, Beleris will not be able to vote, however his name will be on the ballot and he can vote.

It is noted that in the Albanian electoral data, for the first time, two days before the polls, a candidate for mayor is arrested and he is a Greek minority, who, in addition to the Human Rights Union Party and OMONIA , is supported by the opposition party of Sali Berisha and that of former president Ilir Meta.

The polls in Albania opened at 7 am local time for 3,600,000 Albanians to come and vote for the election of 61 mayors and their respective municipal councils.

The mayoral candidates are 144 and belong to 44 parties and coalitions of parties. More than 6 thousand police men have been deployed to maintain order during the election process.

The elections are monitored by several foreign observers from the OSCE, the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and other international organizations.

In these elections , Greek interest is focused on three main municipalities, Heimarra , Finiki and Dropoli – Pogoni.
