Greek Foreign Ministry Condemns Arrest of Greek Election Candidate in Albania

The Greek Foreign Ministry condemned the decision of the Albanian court to arrest the Greek candidate in the local elections of mayor Dionisis-Fredi Beleri on May 13, the press service of the department reports.

Beleri was arrested two days before the election on charges of vote buying in the Albanian town of Himara, home to a large Greek diaspora. On May 13, the court upheld the decision to keep him in custody.

The Greek Foreign Ministry said that such a decision, “unless there is irrefutable evidence” , constitutes a scandal, and added that it would affect EU-Albania relations, as it means that Albania is not on the European path.

Albanian Foreign Minister Olta Jachka said in this regard that “it is almost impossible to understand” how “our friends” in Greece can challenge the decision of the court in Albania, and why being a Greek exempts him from the laws as an Albanian citizen.
