Russia Deputy FM: Expansion of EU Monitoring Mission in Armenia Will Only Bring Additional Tension

Russia is always ready to host Azerbaijani-Armenian settlement negotiations, and hopes that Baku and Yerevan will take into account the relevance of the relevant proposal. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told TASS about this.

“Our [i.e. Russia’s] proposals to conduct peace negotiations on a peaceful settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the territory of Moscow are open to our partners in Armenia and Azerbaijan. We really hope that Yerevan and Baku remember it and understand it,” said the Russian deputy FM during a reception held on former Azerbaijani president Heydar Aliyev’s memorial day.

“We are always ready for such work,” added Galuzin in response to the question whether a meeting in Moscow between the foreign ministers of the three countries was being worked out through diplomatic channels.

He noted that the expansion of the EU civilian monitoring mission in Armenia will not contribute to the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement, but will only increase the tension in South Caucasus.

“Its emergence in Armenia is a completely useless step from the point of view of contributing to the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement,” said the Russian official. “We are convinced that the expansion of the EU mission will be absolutely useless, and will not bring any results in terms of promoting the Azerbaijani-Armenian settlement, the main principles of which were developed in November 2020 by the high-ranking leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, and specified in several trilateral joint statements.”

“The European Union does not bring anything new to Transcaucasia [i.e. the South Caucasus]; it only brings additional tension and mistrust,” Galuzin added.

According to him, EU policy in the South Caucasus is aimed only at pushing Russia out of the region.

“We see that the policy of the European Union in Transcaucasia is aimed exclusively at pushing Russia out of there; moreover, by using our achievements in the process of peaceful settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” said the Russian deputy FM.
